Freelancers: 5 tips to prevent bad debt

One of the roughest parts of being a freelancer is waiting to see if your new client is going to pay you for the services you provided.

Here are a few ways that might be useful for you prevent bad debt and maintain your freelance paycheck:

  • Communicate – Be upfront and clear as to what your payment expectations are.
  • Invoice – Whether you’re using Freshbooks or just an excel spreadsheet that you’ve converted to pdf make sure you send an invoice out to each client.
  • Early Bird Special – Provide your clients with an additional incentive to pay early.
  • Make it Easy to Pay – Try and find a way to accept all forms of payment.
  • Keep in Touch – There will be times when the above methods don’t work for you and you might need to provide them with regular communications to ensure they do not forget about you.

I always make sure I don't do work for anyone who is not close enough for me to go over and strangle them if they fail to pay.

Several times I have had to do that.
