Hi all,

Can anyone tell me if there is a word count application out there that runs under Mac OS 9?

Maybe you'll find something here

http://www.supermagnus.com/mac/Word_Counter/index.html

In MAC OS X you could use command "wc -w file_name.xxx" which would give you word count, but am not sure about 9.

File format Mar 15, 2007

Hi!

Depends on the file format, really.

For Office related, the Word Count in Office does it.

For plain text based formats, html etc, I swear by good old BBEdit.

For Quark/Framemaker, I found this developer:

Worse comes to worst, run Virtual PC under OS9 and select one of the many

Any other format you had in mind?

Thanks, Anni, but that program is only available for OS X. I'm working from Germany, where all agencies are charged by the line, which means I have to start from a character count and then divide by 55. Unfortunately PowerPoint and Excel files don't indicate a character count under Properties. That's why I would like to find a program that can count characters in these file formats, too. But it must run under Mac OS 9, since I don't have OS X yet.

Are you running Office 2001 with the last patches? Mar 28, 2007

Hi Olav,

Are you really running the last version of Office that MS realeased for OS9? And you installed all updates?
At least Word has good support of word and character count. It seems strange that Excel and PPT shouldn't?!

If you're dead set against spending any money, you could pick up a semi-old PC for a penny from a thrift store, transfer the files and check the word count in Office for Windows.

Or team up with a good friend, mail over your files to his PC on a regular basis for word count, and buy him a beer once in a while to repay his services.

Otherwise, Virtual PC for OS9 is they way to go:

Can be found for less than 20 EUR on ebay:

Take care and good luck!
