ESTANQUEIDAD

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Engineering: Industrial
COMPROBACION DEL CONEXIONADO ELECTRICO Y ESTANQUEIDAD CAJAS CONEXIÓN A INSTRUMENTOS O RESISTENCIAS.

I KNOW THAT ESTANQUEIDAD IS 'WATERTIGHTNESS'. BUT CAJA? TALKING ABOUT STEEL TANKS. GRACIAS DE ANTEMANO!

Discussion

Kate Major Patience Apr 8, 2008:
Yes, 'estanquiedad' means -as suggested below- the fit or seal. I just think that the phrase could be made clearer if it's rearranged. As Scott suggests, it means the seal of the boxes (although it sounds awkward).
Chris Bruton (asker) Apr 7, 2008:
Sorry I mean the phrase to be 'estanqueidad cajas'. And yes it is a challenge (along with many others)!
Kate Major Patience Apr 7, 2008:
Hi Chris. This is a horrible one. I can't remember how I got round it last time, but is it not possible to make some sentence structure change so that it reads some thing like '...and that X items fit tightly/properly'?

tightness

Based on téchnical dictionary Thompson Paraninfo, on one hand we have "caja de conexiones" is "connection box"; on the other hand we have "caja de estanqueidad" as "glands". In my opinion the author has elapsed "de la" so you should translate it as " tightness of connection box"

Spanish term (edited): estanqueidad cajas

sealing of the boxes

I think they're using abbreviated or telegraphic style, omitting or eliding "de la"

Before eliding, the phrase was probably:
"ESTANQUEIDAD de las CAJAS CONEXIÓN"
