English term or phrase: is so the reader may know
The reader is referred to Rosevear’s article on this point. He poses the question ‘Can the term “begot” imply only “descent” as with Matthew’s line?’ The answer is a clear ‘No’ since in these genealogies we are given extra details which exclude the possibility of missing generations. Only by making the term ‘begot’ mean ‘fathered the line leading to’, could substantial gaps be argued for. But such thinking is tortuous, when the straightforward reading is plain and understandable and secondly, the overall thrust ***is so the reader may know*** who were the ancesters of Abraham/Noah and how long ago they lived.
