English term

to the chagrin and embarrassment

English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
It is a pretty little romance, all too brief in its details, of how the tired man stopped at a well, and the seven daughters of Jethro came to draw water for their flocks. Certain shepherds came also and drove the girls away, when Moses, true to his nature, took the part of the young ladies, to the chagrin and embarrassment of the male rustics who had left their manners at home.

to the humiliating disappointment, self-consciousness and uneasiness

They were disappointed for sure for driving the girls away and felt self-conscious and uneasy at having been so ill-mannered. They sure did not wish to drive the young ladies away.

In this particular instance, I think the definitions of the two words for the "male rustice" are:

1) definition of chagrin: : disquietude or distress of mind caused by humiliation, disappointment, or failure
2) definition: embarrassment = the feeling of self-consciousness, being ill at ease
(above definitions cross-checked with the dictionary)

Thank you, Arcoiris. And, I appreciate your comment.
neutral Polangmar : I think they wished to drive the young ladies away and only after Moses's remarks felt embarassed/uneasy and realised that their behaviour might have been wrong.
