Apologies for lack of context ... but all it says is "fulano de tal, un policía preventivo" in the state of Hidalgo. I feel that "preventive police" seems a bit daft in English, and was planning to go with something like "patrol officer" which on the basis of Liz's helpful context (a uniformed branch) might just work?

Thanks for that useful reference, Liz. In that case, since they're federal, and their role is clearly not solely preventive, I think the translation should be federal police (officer) - we don't have any context, but Googling shows that it can also be used to refer to an individual.

federal police

See the discussion entries - their role is not one of prevention, so I think it would be misleading to translate it that way.

preventive police

While I think that Lisa's answer sounds the best, in fact, specialists in the field use "preventive police". If you do a Google search on Mexico + "crime prevention police," there are some hits, but many of the ones that are returned have a comma between "prevention" and "police". Do the same for "preventive police" and you'll get many hits.

I don't think there are clear equivalent because the systems in Mexico and the United States are so different, and so I think this person should be identified as belonging to the "preventive police" because that is the name of the force.
