Das ist wohl die häufigste Übersetzung. Unter Behörden fallen wohl alle staatlichen Institutionen, die sich mit der Registrierung und Abwicklung von kriminellen Vorfällen und Personen befassen.

The sentence does not mean they are going to look up the legal situation surrounding the case, it means, in simple terms: the employees will be reported to the police (although in some cases another 'authority', such as customs, may be appropriate). It's just a woolly way of saying this.
