Italian term

ben riparata, ben esposta

Italian to English Other Other diary entry
"Fu un po difficile trovare una casa a loro adatta, desiderando una casa ben riparata, ben esposta."

Trovo molto difficile capire la contraddizione fra "ben riparata" e "ben esposta"

Discussion

R.C. (X) Feb 6, 2011:
so the house is not riparata from the weather but is rather in a "HIDEAWAY" spot.....
Anthony Mazzorana (X) (asker) Feb 6, 2011:
a couple sentences above it's mentioned that the couple preferred "quiet and solitude".

I appreciate everyone's help.
Marco Solinas Feb 6, 2011:
No contradiction I don't see a contradiction: the house can be sheltered (from the prevailing winds, for example) and still face where the owners want it to face (say south for the sun)
Anthony Mazzorana (X) (asker) Feb 6, 2011:
It is handwritten and I wish it were "nascosta" but there is no "n" at the beginning of the word.
R.C. (X) Feb 6, 2011:
ben riparata from unmerciful weather.
ben esposta might refer to "Southward" or "Eastward" or "sunny all day long"
darwilliam Feb 6, 2011:
Is it handwritten? Perhaps 'ben nascosta' instead of 'ben esposta'.
Not exposed to view could work, yet, that contradiction does bug me...

in a sheltered position with good orientation

well protected but with a bright outlook

Peer comment(s):

disagree Barbara Cochran, MFA : "Outlook" has more to do with mental states./'Fraid so. "Esposta" is clearly used as an adjective modifying "casa" in this case.

'fraid not, if you look in the dictionary, it can also refer to the direction or view, which is clearly appropriate for the context of a property

sunny and protected from wind

other ways:
sheltered from winds but sunny
sunny but sheltered
This sounds more natural in English.

You will know what's it's exposed to, depending on the rest of the context.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Barbara Carrara : (reworded) The house needs to be well screened (for quiet and privacy) and yet enjoy a good exposure. Pls also note the typo in your original answer.

I wasn't referring to the sun but to the wind, most likely./Please note that I occasionally make typos, like anyone else.

private and secluded with good exposure

The combination of "private and secluded" gets quite a number of ghits and would take care of the "ben riparata" portion, here, which for me also refers to the a well-screened property, that would ensure maximum privacy.
Aspect or exposure depending on target audience.

"Several building sites, private and secluded, nice views with good exposure. Additional adjoining acreage available."
