Squid bar was a joke ... although my friends do have some funny pet names for different tapas bars and this is actually one of them ;)
Ana Gutierrez Oct 12, 2012:
Drinking is what matters Potear (DRAE): Nav. y P. Vasco. Ir de un bar a otro tomando vasos o potes de vino. The main feature of a 'bar de poteo' is drink. In this example to translate, it explains that, in this particular one, not only can you drink, you can also have something to eat. Pote used to be the vessel but now potar is common slang for drink (and for vomit!)
I like the idea of a squid bar, ha, ha!
neilmac Oct 12, 2012:
My theory is that "poteo" comes from "pota" (giant squid), so you could conceivably call them "squid bars"...

With Simon... Regarding what a snack bar conjures up for English-speakers. A tapas bar on the other hand is something altogether different. Currently, some of the best tapas bars and wines in Spain come from the Basque Country.
Lisa McCarthy Oct 11, 2012:
@ Simon I wasn´t suggesting to use the term 'snack bar' but to call it a 'drop-in bar' / 'a bar where you can drop in' and have a 'pintxo' (traditional snack/tapa) at the counter. // Ah, I see that Wendy mentioned 'snack bar' :)
Wendy Streitparth Oct 11, 2012:
@ Simon: I wasn't seriously suggesting snack bar (hence the inverted commas), but that is basially what it is in an up-market form.
Simon Bruni Oct 11, 2012:
'snack bar' doesn't really do these places justice; pintxos can be quite sophisticated and in English-speaking countries snack bars sell sandwiches / burgers and don't tend to serve alcohol.
Wendy Streitparth Oct 11, 2012:
"snack bar" with small delicacies and wine/beer

"tapas" bar

I offer "tapas" because it is a pretty well known term internationally.

Cómo somos los vascos
Un vasco no se va d tapas: se va de poteo

Ir de tapas en el País Vasco es irse a Potear o Txikitear.
http://locuraviajes.com/blog/san-sebastian-tapas/

a bar where you can go for a few drinks

From the Oxford Spanish:

potear [A1] verbo intransitivo

A (España familiar) (beber): salieron a potear they went out for a few drinks

The idea is that you can go there and just have a few drinks and some pintxos, rather than a proper sit-down meal

a drop-in bar

I don´t think there's any direct equivalent in English so you'll have to get round it another way:

"It's a drop-in bar where you can enjoy some 'pintxos' (snacks) at the counter or sit down to eat."

Something along those lines.

Basically, it's one of those bars that people take in on a pub crawl, going from one bar to another to have a drink and a pintxo in each one. Highly recommendable :)

The whole place was re-vamped in January 2008 and looks magnificent. There is a 'Drop-in' bar (that is not bookable) you should try, especially for lunch.
