La suocera dell'altra invece si trasferirà da Chicago (dove vivono ) all'Arizona. E lei dice (riferendosi alla suocera):
"She can have all the territory west of the Mississippi....and her little dog too". (la suocera ha un cane che ama piu' del figlio!)
Non capisco se è una frase idiomatica o devo fare traduzione letterale. Qualcuno puo' aiutarmi?

No, non è un'espressione idiomatica. Uno sguardo alla geografia statunitense aiuta a capire il senso dell'affermazione. Il fiume Mississippi attraversa il centro degli USA da Nord a Sud ed arriva ad attraversare anche lo Stato dell'Illinois, dove si trova Chicago. Ma Chicago resta a est del corso del fiume, quindi nel momento in cui la donna afferma che la suocera può tenersi tutto il territorio ad ovest del fiume, intende dire che le è indifferente se regna sovrana su mezza nazione, l'importante è che la fetta in cui vive lei, la donna che parla, resti fuori dai confini di tale regno. :-)
