Spanish term

ponerse hasta la verga

May offend Spanish to English Other Idioms / Maxims / Sayings a latino speaking in the US
It refers to getting extremely drunk. It is slang of a latino living in the US. The target audience is the US. Could I use "heavily plastered" or "smashed"? Thanks for your help!

Discussion

Adolfo Fulco Jul 2, 2019:
Much more common... La he escuchado en muchas películas y series actuales, probablemente hubiera elegido *fucking wasted* también. ¡Saludos!
Judith Armele (asker) Jul 2, 2019:
Lorena, thanks I have to confess that I totally missed that from Tomás, I kept in mind his Black-out drunk. Thanks for pointing that out.
lorenab23 Jul 2, 2019:
Hi Judith and Robert I truly appreciate it but Tomas has already offered wasted as an option and I don't think a separate entry is necessary, thus my comment here. When you close the question and make the glossary entry just add the "get fucking..." Happy to help and cheers!
Taña Dalglish Jul 2, 2019:
Thank you Judith.
Judith Armele (asker) Jul 2, 2019:
And thank you all for your help. Taña, you are a genius providing references. Thanks!
Judith Armele (asker) Jul 2, 2019:
Yes, I agree too that Lorena has a point and is very close to the situation. Please, Lorena, can you add your answer so that I can select yours? Sorry, Adolfo, your answer was great, but I have to be faithful to what I chose.
Robert Carter Jul 1, 2019:
Lorena has a point, and I think the same probably goes for the UK too. Idioms like these have a shelf life; and people tend to use them for as long as they sound fresh. That probably explains the use of this expression now, when before it would have been "hasta la madre," etc.
lorenab23 Jun 30, 2019:
@Judith I am coming late to the party but as someone who is a court certified interpreter living in the US I can tell you that although shit-faced could be a valid option it just seems a bit old fashioned and not strong enough. If I were interpreting for this person in court or at a deposition my option would have been fucking wasted...I got fucking wasted. Happy Sunday :-)

Juan Jacob Jun 29, 2019:
@Judith Bien. [Carita triste]. ¿De cuándo es esto?
Judith Armele (asker) Jun 29, 2019:
Juan It is not in the original. I know, for the context, it is referring to alcohol, but it is not in the phrase, that is why I explained it in the comments.
Juan Jacob Jun 29, 2019:
No solo por alcohol... hay que precisar.

The point at which you have consumed so much alcohol, that you are incoherent, have difficulty remembering simple things i.e where you live, how old you are, how ugly you are, how ugly that girl your about to sleep with is. Being 'shit-faced' is usually an experience you only want to try once, and never again.

agree Charles Davis : "Shit-faced" is of American origin (1940s) but was adopted in the UK in the later 20C. I can personally attest it was current among young Londoners by the 1970s, often applied to drugs. "Rat-arsed" is an authentic UK alternative.

Cuando fui a Escocia me contaron q el término viene de cuando se arrojaban desechos por las ventanas y los señores alcoholizados orinaban en la calle, y al no estar atentos se les llenaba la cara de caca. Obvio q puede ser mentira, pero linda historia.

Thanks, Robert! I actually first heard the term in Scotland.
agree neilmac : In the UK, "shit-faced" and "rat arsed" can both mean drunk, or drugged up, or both, without specifying.

Thanks, neil!
agree James A. Walsh : I'm Irish and lived in the UK for 10 years, and "shit-faced" is the default term I would use to describe someone extremely drunk.
