the usual term for the space between two skins of a wall (as in cavity wall). To me shell would seem to refer to the wall itself, rather than to the space between the two layers of the wall.

Explanation:
if it's a crockpot. The ceramic insert (container) is removed from the outer, metal vessel and filled with raw food or water and then reinserted to be slowcooked. 'In eine Zwischenwand Wasser füllen' sounds weird to begin with.
