German term

pflanzlich

German to English Marketing Food & Drink Vegetarian food products ad
From an ad for a range of vegetarian food products; occurs as 'die pflanzliche Abwechslung zu X', 'pflanzliche Ernährung', etc. At first, I thought 'pflanzlich' could be best translated as 'vegetable-based', but now I'm wondering if that's accurate - the products are not just vegetable-based, but contain vegetables only. Just 'vegetable' as an adjective (e.g. 'vegetable diet') doesn't sound right, nor does 'vegetarian' (I think!).
TIA, Orla

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Nov 10, 2004:
Thanks Many thanks to you all. In the end I went for 'vegetable' as an adjective in some cases, and my original 'vegetable-based' in other more specific cases. Vegan sounded a little too restricted, and 'plant-based' didn't quite seem to suit food products. 'From vegetable sources' is great but seemed a little too long to suit the snappy style of my advertising text.

The \"fruit and vegetable\" diet matched the control diet in fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and protein. The only difference: Potassium, magnesium, and fiber got a boost when fruits and vegetables replaced some snacks and sweets.

A second group ate a diet that provided about 8 servings of fruit and vegetables a day (the fruit/**vegetable diet**).

Perhaps also:

a largely vegetable diet
an exclusively vegetable diet

neutral writeaway : sorry, but I really don't agree with justifying an answer with the number of Google hits alone. can be very misleading

A diet that excludes any animal-derived ingredients is called a vegan diet. Is this what you are looking for?

neutral arum : 'vegan' is quite specific - I'd go for 'from vegetable sources'
