(文) here means 文科， in China it not only covers department of liberal arts, but also school of law and school of politics and international relationships. When I was a law school student, I took 数学(文) as my core module.
So I think "department of humanities" is more suitable here.

In Chinese Universities, there are three major streams, respectively liberal arts, science and engineering. Here, the charater "文" indicates that the math couse is a part of liberal arts curriculum and easier than the math course for the other two streams.
