: prospect in this case doesn't mean goal but forecast. Since the "prospect" is "global warming" it is not really a voluntary project. Looking forward to global warming is a daunting prospect, that is a future expectation not a project.

In English, "daunting prospect" is almost always used in reference to some goal whose achievement is desired. I think that this has escaped you.
