"A bus shuttle service with location awareness
In this scenario each shuttle bus has been made into a Web appliance. A user accessing the shuttle bus Web page can see the movement of each bus on a map - updated every 6 seconds! By clicking on a location on the map, a user will be sent notification on the palm PC of the status of a bus’s anticipated arrival to that point.

Each bus has a small computer on board running Chai Server, a Global Positioning System receiver (GPS) so it knows its location, and a wireless network connection to communicate its location. There is a corresponding service that runs in the network that allows users to access information about the buses relevant to their own physical location. This is an application that can be built from already available services - the map could come from a Web mapping service and be accessed via publicly available application programmatic interfaces (APIs). This service also could provide fleet managers with information about specific bus performance data such as speed, fuel efficiency, load, and service records.

Location-aware cars
If a bus can be a Web appliance, so can a car. The car would know where it is - so a lost driver could use a palm PC to access the car’s appliance Web page and review a map or get directions."
