Back to my anthropology translation from Casas Grandes, Mexico, and its ceramics. They are describing a type of metate, or mortar. I've found pictures of it on google images, it looks like a little trough. Here's the text:
Metate is the Spanish form of the ancient Nahuatl word metatl. They were used for grinding corn and other hard seeds and grains. Trough metates, such as this one, were produced at Paquimé on a large scale.

metate parece ser la palabra adaptada por los españoles de la época a partir de la palabra metatl, entiendo que no habría que traducirla... o poner mortero como significado actual.
