"хордовый" stands for the straight line, connecting the ends of the arc.

: That's exactly what is meant (I used to work for the project as an interpreter :) At least, road experts from the World Bank used those terms/'direct highway' is also possible, but experts were from the UK :)

: "Хордовый" does indeed mean "chord". However, a "direct main road" may be independent of any curves, circles, radial roads, etc. E.g. I-90 is a "direct main road" (a freeway, actually) from Boston to many points west of Boston. Doesn't make it "хордовая".

Such chord roads as opposed to radial roads connecting the centre with the periphery are meant to connect two points without crossing the centre.
This is a relatively new term and I am afraid it has no correspondence in English yet, but in Russian reports/documents translated into English they use "chord roads" (see below)
In order to unload radial lines of the Moscow motor junction chord and joint roads are to be constructed..
