Discussion

neilmac Jul 7, 2011:
DLyons' Hacienda seems to be nearest the mark so far regarding the origin of the name, which would endorse Liz. I can't really "agree" since I don't know...
DLyons Jul 6, 2011:
Hacienda "La Bretaña" There were some scientific studies done around this location in Ecuador. I suppose one might call that a "bretañal"?
liz askew Jul 6, 2011:
I think it is Ecuador.
DLyons Jul 6, 2011:
I'm confused This is the grassland area (Poaceae) of the cloud forest about 2,500m high. However bretaña is a hyacinth and I don't know of any zone that could reasonably be called a bretañal.

In Peru, it seems like this zone would be just above the yunga. That's sometimes called the "Quechua zone".

What country are we talking about here?

Might this be "puna" containing hyacinth species?

@ Tanya That link worked perfectly.

BTW,this is the only incidence of "bretanal" that I found, albeit on a translated site....therein lies the difficulty, however if the original name is kept, the rest of the text describes what it actually is.
Muriel Vasconcellos Jul 6, 2011:
@Liz I would like to see your reference, but for some reason it's inaccessible to me. I've had that problem before with references that you post. I'm wondering if there's some other way you can share the information.

Thank you!
agree Charles Davis : I don't think there's anything else we can do with this. Clearly it is Ecuador, but I can't find any relevant meaning of "bretaña" or "bretaño", or any connection between those words and Poaceae (or Gramineae). The name is a mystery.

Exactly. My findings and conclusions too.
agree neilmac : I reckon it must be named after DLyons' Hacienda...
