Since I run my current laptop, about 15 months, every time on start-up I get a message, that MS .NET Framework 2.0 need to be installed. But when I download it and install I receive the message that it is already installed as part of the operation system. I looked at the support page of MS, there are lots of people with the same problem but no answer.
Perhaps someone has the answer?

Searching MS' sites is not the best strategy, especially if you are not a computer specialist. I've just tried Google and found this link:

Thanks, but... Oct 22, 2012

... after running the repair utility the error persists. In control panel I see .NET framework 4 Client profile. Is this the one I should try to install again?

.NET verifier Oct 22, 2012

Heinrich,

An excellent small, free .NET verification tool is generously provided by Aaron Stebner:

As a first step it might be good to download the verifier and see whether all of your .NET installations are okay (each one takes about a minute to test from the dropdown list).

Each one is individual, not cumulative: 1.0, 2.0... 4.5. So you need to test each one separately.

Which application asks for NET 2.0 on your PC? Oct 22, 2012

Sorry, I don't know. NET 4 is not an Upgrade from NET 2.0. Actually, NET 2.0, NET 3.5 and NET 4 are different members of the NET family. So, if an application needs NET 2.0, NET 2.0 must be in place.
See: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-windows_programs/do-i-need-all-of-the-different-versions-of-net/9230272f-2d32-4d5e-a784-b1ad4217ca17

I remember, that some time ago some applications asked for an older/different version of NET 2.0. Maybe you have such an application/service in Autostart.
