Con respecto a tu nueva pregunta, si se refiere a "responderle" a otro equipo durante un partido, creo que todavía podría ser skill... se podría decir algo como they couldn't match their (the other team's) skill. "Talent" is otra opción... they couldn't match the other team's talent... O dependiendo del resto del contexto podría ser lo que sugiere Daniel Coria es su respuesta, tactics... o strategy.... they had no strategic response for example or no strategy to respond, o más simple todavía no counter-tactics/counter-stratagies or plays to respond... Pero como digo, todo depende del contexto...
