Spanish term or phrase: obra de autor
Hello. From a magazine article about the film "Poltergeist".

"Aunque la obra estuviese escrita y producida por el llamado Rey Midas se escogió a Tobe Hopper para dirigirla que pasó a los anales del cine en 1974 con una obra de autor , cumbre del freak show , llamada La Matanza de Texas."

Thanks for your help :)

independent film/art film
Explanation:
En el cine, "de autor" sugiere o bien un proyecto independiente o simplement un proyecto artístico/no comercial.

This entry confirms that Texas Chainsaw Massacre was an indepent film. I think "indepent film" here is more appropriate than "art film."

neutral  Patricia Rosas: but it was a highly profitable film! I mean of the worst sorts, you know?!

-> Absolutely, but I've always seen "cine de autor" refer to this type of quirky, odd films, regardless of their box office success or failure.

agree  Henry Hinds: "Independent". "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" produjo una fortuna en utilidades.

auteur work

Explanation:
I would use this term if the message being conveyed is that the film is indeed of the auteur genre. If the message is just that the work is not a studio film, then I think the other suggestion might work better.

Explanation:
just a suggestion although 'independent' is probably better. I think they meant it is more of a minority audience thing, not quite experimental
