The thing is that most of our doctors (whether graduated in an Arab or Western country) know these terms in English. According to what I know, Medicine is taught in English in our schools except for Syria! So I thought that the term would sound strange even to an Arab specialist. But Iguess I'd have to agree with the precision point. It's a specialized medical text after all.

If you lower the register, you may gain clarity (for untargeted readers), but you are likely to lose something, perhaps precision.

When translating technical material, as a general rule, comprehensibility level is set by the source text.

...in any language, and, as a matter of method, the translator is obligated to assume that the writers of the original text know that. They chose a difficult term for their own reason, possibly because it is precise and the intended reader is a specialist

First, I believe the word is "intrascalene," not "interscalene."

Second, It is generally not a good practice to alter the register of the text you are translating, upward or downward. "Intrascalene" is not exactly a word we use around the dinner table.

Sorry Fayez ... I should have pointed out that I looked for the term and found الأخمعي there. But please everybody, note that the reader doesn't usually google for words while reading a hard copy. I'd appreciate more suggestions other than الأخمعي (where does it come from aslan this أخمعي word? Any idea about its root?)
