accidents, unemployment insurance under Law 19.728, and amendments to those laws, and whether those services are provided by the institutions created by law for those purposes or other financial institutions through which financial services related to the social security system are provided or could be provided.

Meanwhile, other credit providers have expanded to fill the gap left by the banks in the late 1990s. These include Chile’s cajas de compensación, non-profit organizations created in the mid-1900s to provide basic social benefits, such as family allowances, for member companies’ employees.

The economic downturn of the late 1990s and bank retrenchment provided a great consumer finance opportunity for the cajas, admits Jaime Henríquez, assistant manager for credit evaluation at Caja de Compensación Los Andes. Today, the cajas are an important source of consumer credit, accounting for some 14% of the market.
