French term

brancard

French to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks car body structure
I am translating a technical text about car roofs, and I have come across the phrase, 'inserer une traverse centrale entre les brancards'. This is illustrated with a diagram, but I have no idea of the equivalent in English. Any suggestions?

"stretchers" is the only word I can think of. Could stretchers be possibly transported on car roofs?
