Hi Charmian,
Not my field really, so not sure.
I tried to follow a University of Exeter link found on Google where I could read "basement: zócalo", but unfortunately it lead to a dead end.
I did however find this other link where the keywords to an article titled "Listric growth faults in the Kenya Rift Valley = Développement de failles listriques dans la Rift Valley, Kenya".
There are keywords in several languages, where you can read "Basement tectonics" in English and "Tectónica de zócalo" in Spanish.

It's not much to go on I'm afraid, but it's a start I suppose.
I'll see if I can back it up with beter refs.
