Meine Frage: Soll sichergestellt werden, das Feld (1) vom Start weg anzuführen oder (2) nicht vom Start weg anzuführen?
(1), weil man dann gleich die Nase vorn hat und keine Aufholjagd mehr starten muss
(2), weil man im Wettkampf mit seinen Kräften haushalten sollte
Was sagt euer Hausverstand? Aber vielleicht bin ich von dem "Schrott" schon stark geschädigt und kriege gar nicht mehr mit, dass die Grammatik hier eh nur eine Option zulässt.

das Feld (1) vom Start weg anzuführen
h/she is listing everything they had to make sure... it is also mentioned that they wanted to ensure everyone knew what they were doing. that kind of gives the answer away. also, they would have used said "and not to..." if they meant "not to lead", in my opinion.
