Explanation:
Se não contarmos com a pré-escola (antigo pré-primário), no Brasil, temos onze séries de estudo regular antes do nível superior:
oito séries no Ensino Fundamental - (o antigo primário) da 1ª à 4ª e (o antigo ginásio) da 5ª à 8ª;
três séries no Ensino Médio (da 1ª à 3ª série)

da 6ª série do Ensino Fundamental à 1ª série do Ensino Médio


Explanation:
The point here is that there are two years left (11th Grade and 12th Grade) before University, which in Brazil would be the 2ª série and the 3ª série of Ensino Médio (formerly 2º Grau and before that, when I was young, "colegial"). The only course to have 4 years in the Ensino Médio is, TTBOMK, the Teacher Training Course ("magistério" or formerly "curso normal").

A recent development is that the Ensino Fundamental (formerly 1º Grau) has been increased from eight to nine years, which also proves my point - if the first nine grades are the Ensino Fundamental, the 10th can only be the 1st year of the Ensino Médio.

Of course this refers to Brazil, I do not know if this holds in Portugal.
