French term or phrase: visites et levées des réserves
This is in a document explaining the quality control procedures for a building site of a large project. It involves the acceptance of works for the project. I am not clear "des réserves" means in this context. Many thanks.

English translation:inspections and release of retentions
Explanation:
Retentions are monies held back in respect of defects and matters not complete at the provisional handover.

The above should be "monies", not "moneys", but a higher standard of literacy is expected of translators than of surveyors.

"The release of retention monies is – ultimately – dependent on the issue of a certificate of making good defects. If this is delayed, so is the money. ..."

That one got it right!

Possibly lifting, or removing. or signing off reservations or conditions. I don't think "release" is correct.

neutral  Emma Paulay: I doubt that 'réserves' refers to retentions here.//Although payment depends on quality control, it is not part of the procedure. This is talking about withdrawing reservations made at the provisional acceptance stage.

-> My level of confidence may be too high, as it could refer to the reservations noted rather than the monies retained. However, the signing off of defects and the release of retentions generally occur together.

neutral  Bourth (X): Agree with EP that this is likely to have more to do with "acceptance of work made good" than with filthy lucre ;-), though one can't go without the other.

-> Thanks for the correction. Not only works though, it can also apply to paperwork and authorisations that are still in the pipeline at the time of conditional handover.

neutral  Connor: inspection sounds ok but I think you should hold back on the retention. Bourth's explanation sounds good (he is always right anyway).

-> We must beware of giving Bourth a big head - he's **nearly** always right.
