French term or phrase: inhiber
it is a matter of "inhibiting" all electric consumers in a vehicle and observe current delivered in such conditions (battery is charged during this time). I have a little doubt for using "to inhibit" here? what do you think? an another term to mean that?

English translation:disable
Explanation:
I agree with you; in EN, 'inhibit' has a much narrower, specialized meaning, and really doesn't work here.

As far as i can see, all they mean is to either turn off, or otherwise disconnect, and equipment that might be drawing current from the battery. It seems to me that 'disable' fits the bill in that instance.

  -> Yes, of course, but I thought the explanation was clear enough.

neutral  Tony M: Better to hide and re-post with the EN answer made clear; and no, in this instance, your alternative suggestion of 'shunt' would not be right at all, I'm afraid.

12 mins
  -> Thank you Radu.

neutral  Tony M: 'deactivate' isn't a very nice word to use in EN (even though it IS used, of course), and often reeks of translation. I also tend to think it applies better to things that are by their nature inherently 'active' in the first place.
17 mins
  -> That is the point, active or not. I like disable but there is something definitive to the word which does not correpond to my idea of inhiber.

neutral  Charles Hawtrey (X): I don't like de-activate either - but you do see it often.

Explanation:
Choice depends on type of device - there may not be an actual switch available.

My car is hideously complicated - I have no idea how to disconnect plenty of the electronic gizmos. The manual certainly doesn't tell you. In fact, if you don't drive the thing for more than about 3 weeks you'll need a jump start, if not a new battery. In other words, there are a number of inaccessible things, such as the immobiliser, trip computer and goodness knows what else, that you need a full workshop manual for further instructions.
