index marks Explanation: This term might well fit your application. Over the years that I set the distributor timing on cars (thankfully long past), the engraved lines on the crankshaft pulley were simply called "index marks". Usually the Top Dead Center line was marked 0 and other lines were marked with numbers indicating degrees of rotation. The term does not entail that each mark is numbered; some may be, some may not be. A google search for the phrase turns up many uses in different applications; a couple follow.
