If the terms are FOB shipping point and evidence indicates that the risks and rewards of ownership have not transferred to the customer upon shipment, the Affiliate should record a topside entry, at least quarterly, to defer revenue recognition until receipt by the customer. This entry should defer both revenue (net of discounts and promotional payments) and cost of sales; simply deferring the gross profit impact is not acceptable.
