Hola
Estoy traduciendo una sentencia judicial de España y me encontré con esta frase: "De dicho delito es responsable en concepto de autor el acusado xxxx, en virtud de lo dispuesto en el art 28 del C.P."

Entiendo que el acusado es responsable por el delito siendo el autor del mismo, conforme a art...., pero no sé como expresarlo en inglés.

principle in the first degree


Explanation:
The term perpetrator is used by police, prosecutors, news reports, television shows, etc. However, principle in the first degree is what is used in American penal codes to identify the same thing that autor does in the Spanish Penal Code. What´s more, Black´s Law Dictionary (9th ed.) defines principle in the first degree as the following: ¨The perpetrator of a crime.¨

agree  Charles Davis: Correct. This is after all a judicial sentence. Maria's version is pleasingly natural, but your term is the right one for this document. But correct the spelling: principal, not principle (it's correct lower down in your answer but wrong at the top).
