"Se realizaron mediciones in situ de la profundidad de los lechos de sedimentación en las corrientes de agua con un ***barreno*** graduado en centímetros que era enterrada para medir la columna de sedimentos depositados; con el objeto de determinar el grosor de los sedimentos depositados"

Every definition I've seen for this word has something to do with a hole, but from the context, it's obviously a type of sampling implement.. perhaps an auger (although I don't see how that could be easily graduated for measurements) or a coring device of some sort?

They eventually supplied a glossary, and this was given as "measuring drill," which I don't like at all. I think both "auger" and "sampling tube" are better, but there's more evidence linking "auger" directly with "barreno," so I'll go with that. Thanks to everyone who helped.

"auger" is OK, but sampling tubes are more accurate.
