Tengo una pregunta más bien general. Tengo un text a traducir y contiene muchísimas abreviaturas, incluyendo Gen.St..

Lo que me gustaría preguntarles, es ¿cómo traducirían ustedes estas abreviaturas? Por lo general, no se traducen las abreviaturas y siglas.

A continuación incluyo el texto completo para que vean cómo se usan estas abreviaturas. Son bien cortos estos textos:

@Laura In my view you should leave this, and the other abbreviations, unchanged in your Spanish translation, for the reason Lorena says: if you translate them, they will be useless as references. What I would do, if it were my translation, is to compile a list of these abbreviations as they come up and then provide a reference list as a kind of appendix to the translation, giving a Spanish translation/explanation for each one. In this case, you might put:

Gen.St. 1906: The general statutes of the state of Florida (Estatutos generales del estado de Florida). St Augustine, FL, The Record Company, 1906.

Of course, doing it this way would involve some research, which you may not wish or be able to do. But in any case I wouldn't translate the references in the text.

@ Laura In regards to your original question as to whether to translate or not: I remember a particular discussion here regarding this very topic and (I wish I could find said discussion) this was the final outcome, translate the abbreviations just as a matter of continuity in your text but it should also be kept in its original language in parentheses because if somebody needs to read further on said laws one would need to look them up in the original language. It was a solution that made a lot of sense to me but other experts may have a different opinion ;-)

If you want to add a little finesse to your translation you can translate the equivalent by mentioning...(por sus siglas en Español)... but It will depend on the instructions given to you by company who gave you the job.
