: Your ref. seems like a translation from EN to me; the hairs themselves don't get thinner, they just become fewer. / Yes, that's the mechanism, but it's not what the term means HERE.

Suffering from hair loss myself, I can tell you the hairs become thinner because of the narrowing of the pores caused by sebum... Then, the hairs stop growing cause they can't get through the pores...

When we talk about hair 'thinning', we mean hair is lost, so that the overall amount of hair seems less dense — this is the same idea as thinning seedlings or woodland. When someone has simply lost some of their hair, they are 'getting a bit thin', we say 'dégarni'
It is NOT referring to individual hairs themselves getting thinner — in that case, we would say that the hair has got 'finer'.
