Subhankar Banerjee

Bengali to English Social Sciences Names (personal, company) Name of a person
Hello everybody,

Could you please help me with pronounciation of this person's name? Actually, I have to transcript it in Latvian, but it would be very helpful if I knew how to pronounce it at least in English. :-)
Many thanks in advance!

Thanks:) Isn't our profession wonderful? I didn't know anything about Mr. Subhankar Banerjee until now, but thanks to the project I am translating at the moment, I will know much about another great artist, and who knows -- maybe become an admirer of his work just like you. :-)

Many thanks for your answers so far, and especially for indicating this is from Bengali (truly sorry for mistaken it with Hindi, but I really had no idea. Hope I haven't offended anybody with this.)

shoo-BHON-kor BA-ner-ji

The name is from Bengali. That is, it is from West Bengal, India. Although a person with this name could be found in Bangladesh as well. The pronunciation will be slightly different depending upon whether it is a Bengali-speaking person that you are talking to or if you are talkingto a Hindi-speaking person (presumably outside of Bengal).

In native Bengali, the pronunciation will be like
shoo-BHON-kor BA ner ji

shoo rhymes with shoe
BHON is like the 'ong' in wrong
kor rhymes with for

BA is like the 'ma' in man, or 'ba' in bat
ner rhymes with her (like the 'ner' in partner)
ji is just as you would pronounce the letter 'g'.

Hope this helps.

Clarification : the BH in BHON is NOT silent, it just rhymes with wrong.

the BH is a consonant between b and v; it's an asphirated b.

Oh! Thanks to your additional notes, I recognize him as a person whose work I deeply admire. He is indeed from West Bengal, India, where his name would be pronounced as I indicated earlier.

please see explanation below regarding pronounciation

Hello Evija,

the surname Banerjee is a very common Bengali last name in India, the doubled -ee at the end of the surname would be pronounced like a stressed long "i", this last name is also very often spelled Bandopadhaya

Regarding the first name Subhankar: If I am not mistaken, I think the s at the beginning of the first name would be rather pronounced like Shubh (derived from the Sanskrit word meaning "luck", pronounced with a short "u")
Note from asker:
Thank you for your input as well, Serena, it's much appreciated:)
