Dutch term

probleemwijk

Dutch to English Other Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
pretty much self-explanatory,
to be precise though, it´s the Dutch tv programme Probleemwijken which i want to render into english,
and somehow my brain can´t think any further than Problem Areas....

There must be something better out there, I hope...

Discussion

Dave Calderhead Dec 12, 2005:
Thanks, Vic - do we get royalties if someone uses this name for a programme somewhere - this glossary reference must be good enough substantiation of date and time - Maybe we should make it a registered trademark, retire and wait for money to roll in!

district in trouble

naughty neighbourhood,
or your problem area is also not such a bad idea

Maybe even Neighbourhood Hell or A Hell of a Neighbourhood - reflecting similar programme titles like neighbours from hell?

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Points go to the Hell of a neighbourhood of course, not to the disstressed district... i can unfortunately not think of a satisfactory term for the dictionary: a problem area could be just about anything, and a criminal neighbourhood is too vague...typical"

deprived areas

It's a bit tricky though, and potentially discriminatory, to link deprivation with problems and "crime" although they do usually tend to go hand in hand.... I personally also like "problem areas"

thanks for the help, but especially since it is the translation for a tv show, ill stick with daves lovely prose. tra!

problem area

enkelvoud. Ook mogelijk: problem quarter, city area in trouble. De mogelijkheden zijn eindeloos.
Note from asker:
pronleemwijken do not necessarily have to border on eachother of course... hoewel je evt. natuurlijk kunt stellen dat de schilderswijk het verre zuidwestpuntje is van het probleemgebied dat in het noordoosten begrenzd wordt door osdorp ;)
