Dutch term

een ijkmoment

Dutch to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation
Can anyone help me with the term 'ijkmoment'. The sentence reads 'alle initiatieven leiden tot een ijkmoment in 2016'.

Discussion

Lianne van de Ven Jul 30, 2009:
Toss up The reality is that I always try to help, and that lately I have become annoyed by askers being snoep as you say. I considered doing what writeaway suggested, but another way of helping is doing the research and providing an answer and making a remark, like I did.

The remark about the toss up is not my most important point, I think.
L.J.Wessel van Leeuwen Jul 30, 2009:
I thought that I made it clear. The toss up is to earn some easy points or to be principled. The purpose is to help a colleague. The points are the reward / acknowledgment.
Lianne van de Ven Jul 30, 2009:
LJ Wessel van Leeuwen: what exactly are you disagreeing with?

A "moment of reckoning" sounds too dramatic. A benchmark date is a good option.
Naomi Portnoy (asker) Jul 30, 2009:
would 'moment of reckoning' work?
Naomi Portnoy (asker) Jul 30, 2009:
My apologies everyone. The complete paragraph reads:

In samenspraak met verschillende ministeries wordt gekeken welke invloed het organiseren van de Spelen heeft op de infrastructuur van ons land. Alle initiatieven leiden tot een ijkmoment in 2016, waarop wordt bepaald of het zinvol is om daadwerkelijk tot kandidaatstelling voor de Olympische Spelen
2028 over te gaan.
L.J.Wessel van Leeuwen Jul 30, 2009:
Lianne sorry, I disagree with you. Writeaway is correct. The purpose is to help a colleague. The points are the reward / acknowledgment. I believe in principle and the principle is simple: Philip and others are right: when asking help from colleagues, provide context and don't be snoep with it.
Lianne van de Ven Jul 30, 2009:
And btw writeaway, I do get your point. The toss up is to earn some easy points or to be principled.
Lianne van de Ven Jul 30, 2009:
Guessing... Entering the bit of sentence between the quotation marks in the unsurpassed google machine makes it clear beyond a doubt where the text came from. The problem is that the asker didn't provide it.
writeaway Jul 29, 2009:
impossible to provide an answer without context all anyone can do is guess. you need to explain what's going so people have at least some idea where/why ijkmoment is being used and what it refers to.
philgoddard Jul 29, 2009:
More context please!

evaluation

The author is referring to a time/moment to evaluate, literally to "calibrate." A "calibration moment." But I am not sure I would use that.

All initiatives will lead to an evaluation in 2016, when it will be decided if it wants to be nominated to be candidate to host the games of 2028.

Complete tekst:

Oh yes, my additional note: since when do translators think (and support the idea) that words have stand-alone meanings and can be translated correctly without sufficient context?

Why would another proz member have to do a google search to find the original text online to understand what the question is about?

It has been REALLY annoying to me lately!!

THANKS!
agree Joost Elshoff (X) : need I say more? sounds good, and you're right... can't ever have enough context to offer good translations

thanks Joost
agree sindy cremer : Your comment says it all, Lianne! Couldn't agree more!

Thanks, Sindy
agree Christopher Smith (X) : Yes, context is always needed.

Thanks again!
neutral writeaway : refusing to answer context-free questions (at least until context is provided) is one way to get the message across.?have a look. I answered 4 hours later AFTER context was provided.

I know. And adding a note like mine is another (in 2004 you still asked... http://www.proz.com/kudoz/dutch_to_english/human_resources/8... // see my discussion entry
agree Ron Willems : yes, or "evaluation moment" perhaps. although the original meaning of ijken is to calibrate, in recent years (her)ijken has been used more and more in the sense of (re)evaluation. obviously I also agree with the contents of your comment AND with making it

Moment of truth
Peer comment(s):

agree writeaway : I also toyed with moment of truth. but posted a more 'scientific' suggestion. imo moment of truth could work.

Thanks. I could not decide between "Decision day" and moment of truth either...
