I couldn't find Forschungswirkstoff anywhere, but it seems like a good translation based on Forschungsmedikament.
"Das schon 1884 vom britischen Physiologen John Berry Haycraft in den Speicheldrüsen des Blutegels entdeckte Hirudin ist nun als gentechnologisch hergestelltes Molekül verfügbar, und die Gefahr, daß bei der Gewinnung aus dem Blutegel Viren oder Bakterien mit übertragen werden, ist somit ausgeschlossen. Hirudin ist zur Zeit noch nicht frei erhältlich, sondern es wird als Forschungsmedikament in der Klinik erprobt. Es wirkt gerinnungshemmend, indem es sich stark an Thrombin bindet und dessen Wirkung unabhängig von Antithrombin III hemmt.
