The story behind the sentence is as follows:
When a spaceship returns to the Earth, it must reenter the atmosphere. And it must do so at a particular angle.
If the angle is too steep, the ship will go down too fast and burn down.
However, if the angle is too shallow, then the ship will rebounce (skip out)from the atmosphere and off it goes into the deep space.
