Creio que é uma alusão às varetas de combustível dos reatores nucleares. Literalmente seria canhão (munido) de varetas de combustível. Se achar que "nuclear" se aplica, poderia ficar mais simples dizer "canhão nuclear", embora com alguma perda do sentido original. Ou então "canhão com varetas de combustível nuclear". Em lugar de vareta eventualmente poderia ser usado barra.
