English term

knowing [as adj.]

English to Spanish Social Sciences Religion
Could someone please help me with this one?

Here is the context, from an essay that is critical of modern culture and mores: "The 8-year-old girl in G-string and earrings is simultaneously childlike and knowing, a creature torn between worlds, and on the verge of desecration."

Thank you

Lydia De Jorge Apr 11, 2011:
Based on the context, the girl (like so many in our modern society) is still a child but with knowledge beyond her years, probably acquired from the media, school, and the street (street-smart). I don't believe it is pejorative. Simply stating a sad fact of modern life.

Gracias! Many thanks to all! This was immensely helpful. I went with "al tanto", given that it has some of the same subtle and cynical connotations of the term "knowing".

sabedora

my tuppence. a slight connotation of the 'sabe todo' en el sentido despectivo que Charles acertadamente apunta en su nota.

knowing

"knowing
adjective
chiefly derogatory experienced or shrewd, especially excessively or prematurely so:
today's society is too knowing, too corrupt"
http://oxforddictionaries.com/view/entry/m_en_gb0447800#m_en...
