big red book

Non-PRO English Art/Literary
Michael Aspel: I go to functions and see people I had known for a long time and go up to say hallo. And they'd start doing this [saying: my God, is it you?] all the time. And I thought, why are you acting like that? And they were afraid that I was going to strike with the big red book.

This is your life

Michael Aspel ran (or still runs) a successful series on the BBC called "This is your life", whereby he (and a camera team) sneaked up on unsuspecting celebrities or other famed individuals to tell the TV audience about that persons life.

People were in awe of him as "the next time, it could be you..."

Example:

GRAND Prix team owner Eddie Jordan was left speechless as he unveiled his new Formula 1 car at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane, London.

The 51-year-old Irishman, who lives in Oxford, had just unveiled the EJ10, signifying his team\'s tenth year in F1, when he was stunned by the appearance of Michael Aspel and his big red book.

Jordan discovered he was the latest subject of BBC Television\'s This Is Your Life programme.

Example:

After his ITV chatshow last Friday night, our record goalscorer Ian Wright was ambushed by Michael Aspel brandishing his big red book and uttering the inevitable words \"Ian Wright, This Is Your Life\".

agree Peter Coles : Although originally from the US, this programme became absolutely huge in the UK through the 60s, 70s & 80s. So for several generations of Brits, the Big Red Book and the words "This ... is ... your ... life" are very meaningful.

A red book full of memories - explanation below

As Klaus said:
Michael Aspel holds the red book in his hands as he "reads" through the life story of the unsuspecting celebrity. Each page brings new acquaintances in that persons life - some of whom join the celebrity on stage, some of whom are beamed up onto a large screen.

"They were afraid that I was going to strike with the big red book" means that people at functions thought that he was going to spring a surprise on them too - as they associate his face with the programme. (He doesn't hit anyone with it!)
(Klaus has probably explained this - unfortunately I can't see his answer at the moment.)
