The matron of a brothel (the year is circa 1930) in a city by the sea praises one of her former employees:
"Look at this one here. [shows a photo of a girl] That’s Wisteria. Convicted of shoplifting four times. But I worked on her. Taught her all the finer things, and now she’s married to the President of the Salinas Forward and Upward Club. Carried the tree on Harbor Day."
I don't understand what the last sentence may refer to. Maybe the native speakers do? Many thanks!
