Shortstop ethos

Non-PRO English Other
"Okay, Okay. Take it easy. It's only been a couple of days since you met the guy," Kiki said, nervously eyeing my fourth scotch like now would be a good time to take it away. From my cold, dead hand, I thought.

Besides, that would have been against the whole Shortstop ethos-we were in the kind of dark, dank, smelly Eastside hole where doing your best Barfly imitation is strongly encouraged. And I'm doing just that.

playing the field

Answering a question about an idiomatic phrase with another idiom... oh well. I'm not the baseball expert, but my thinking behing my answer is you're playing the field if you're playing shortstop.

I could be way off, but it's a thought... Any baseball fanatics out there?

agree PB Trans : could be related to sex... maybe a "one-night stand"

playing the field, looking to score... egads! all these idioms thanks!
agree Michael Powers (PhD) : Excellent, JMKara, in Cassell's Dictionary of English idioms, "play the field" is "to diversity one's interests and activities, esp. not to commit oneself to one boyfriend or girlfriend." Whether one-night stands or not, variety is the spice of life here.

;) thank you! and for added variety, the play on baseball terminology here also suggests how far you go with each friend...second or third base?

:)
neutral Catherine Norton : A shortstop is supposed to catch "bunts" and short hits . He can't be said (at least in my opinion) to be "playing the field".

hmm i wonder then if it could be getting what you can get, without having to try too hard

against the guiding beliefs of the Shortstop circle

Shortstop can be a name of a bar.
"Ethos" means the distinguishing character, sentiment, moral nature, or guiding beliefs of a person, group, or institution.
I think that "Shortstop ethos" in your context means the guiding beliefs of a number of people who are bound by similar interests and are used to meet in a bar called Shortstop.
