flip top
There's no context so I could be "à côté de la plaque" but 'un portable à clapet' is a 'flip phone' or 'flip top phone'. This also applies to other electronic devices such as organisers, Palms, mini-PC, etc.

I guess this is too obvious to be right! So, if it\'s purely electronic - inside the device - \"clapet\" is probably just \"switch\" (on the circuit board)???

flip
You're right, it is the lid, not an electronic device. It can flip but it can also slide or rotate but they are still called flip. (Ref: Fr: Clapet actif coulissant En: With it's rotating flip, the Motorola V80...). Un Clapet is a automatic mechanical device, moving in the direction of flow like a valve but unlike a vane, that stops the flow of a fluid. I didn't say liquid because here it is the electro-magnetic flow of the transmission that gets interrupted when it is operated ;-)
