Attending physician
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
An attending physician is a physician that has completed residency and practises medicine in a clinic or hospital, often focusing on the speciality learned during residency. An attending physician also supervises residents and medical students.
Legally, attending physicians have final responsibility for patient care, even when many of the minute-to-minute decisions are being made by subordinates (nurse practicioners, physician assistants, resident physicians, and medical students).

It is a bit confusing...I agree with Sue that there may have been some confusion with ""médecin-chef de/du service".

: Is médecin de service the same as chef de clinique assistant? If so the nearest equivalent is chief resident

Je travaille dans un CHU. Il y a des internes qui font des stages pendant 4 ans; à la fin de ces 4 ans l'interne soutien sa thèse et devient chef de clinique assistant; l'équivalent en américain sera chief resident.
