French term

Coupe au bloc

French to English Tech/Engineering Textiles / Clothing / Fashion Glove terminology
I hate to blow up the Kudos board, but this specification list is proving more difficult than I first thought.

Here is the context (instructions for leather cutting and assembly):

Détails de confection
Le corps du gant, le pouce et les fourchettes sont dépecées, étavillonnées et fendues au calibre approprié.
LA COUPE AU BLOC EST PROHIBEE
Le pouce et les fourchettes sont soigneusement assortis au corps du gant.

I am imagining a stack of leather being cut, instead of each layer being cut one by one (which would be prohibited becasue it would be less accurate); but I don't have the English jargon to express such a thing, and I'm not sure that my hunch is right. (My "Lexique technique de la maroquinerie" is turning out to be a perfectly useless waste of paper!)

Block cutting

"he leather
from the tannery goes to the cutters, who lay it out on
blocks or tables and cut out the pieces according to the
numerous shapes and sizes of the patterns. Blocks are
used for the cheaper and coarser grades, while tables
are the most convenient for thin, fine leather. In the
former case the sharp edge of the die is placed over the
sheet of leather and struck with a maul, but for thin
leather, a sharp knife run dexterously around the pattern
cuts it out perfectly."

"As the leather was first placed
upon a block to receive the blows of the
mallet, this grade of goods came to be called
"block cut." In "table cut" gloves, however,
the leather was tranked out on a table and
shaped for the size desired. Then, by means
of a power press many pairs were cut at once."

Thank you, BD, that clearly backs up my hunch!
