chiné can mean that there is any kind of variation in the yarn — it may be a colour variation, or it may be a thickness varitaion, giving rise to the 'slub silk' effect.

I think one needs to be particularly careful with this one, not to remove the ambiguity and risk getting it wrong.

As ever, "Ask the customer" is the only really safe solution
